Do you really own your domain name?

July 6th, 2009 by James "Rick" Dragoo, Jr.

In the Internet world your domain name is the equivalent of your house, and the land the house sits on. Just as with real estate the domain name has a legal owner. In real estate the deed or title tells who legally owns a piece of physical property. On the Internet, domain names have the same type of information.

Anytime a domain name is registered for use it is assigned a registrant and an administrative contact. Whoever appears in the registrant field is legally the owner of that domain name. The administrative contact, while not the official owner, is the master email address of record. Any changes to the domain name must be approved by whoever has access to the email address.

No matter whom you work with to design and host your website either you or your company should always be listed as the registrant.

It is extremely important to check this yourself. You can use any WHOIS service to lookup this information for free. One we recommend is:
http://www.domaintools.com

Simply type your domain name such as blainehilton.com in the lookup field and click search. Scroll down to the registrant information section. If this is not in your name then you may have an issue. Many unethical hosting companies and web design outfits will register the domain to themselves. This way you must stay their client, because they, not you own the domain name.

Would you have the deed to your house put in the name of your plumbing company?

Jackson’s Death Rocks the Internet

June 26th, 2009 by James "Rick" Dragoo, Jr.
Michael Jackson - August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009

By now everyone knows about the death of Michael Jackson yesterday. The only thing that has been reported at this time is that he had cardiac arrest and stopped breathing. Other specifics have not been released yet.

Some have said that Jackson may have been the most famous person on an international level. He may have had a questionable personal life but no one can deny his impact on the music world.

On June 25, 2009 around 2:40 pm Pacific Time several websites and services began experiencing slow downs and problems as a result of millions of people worldwide trying to find Jackson related information simultaneously.

Between 2:40 pm and 3:15 pm Pacific time people performing Michael Jackson related searches were greeted with the error “your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application.” This means that the Google system perceived so many searches for the same thing at the same time as an automated virus trying to potentially attack the system. Once Google fixed the problem it continued to run slow for several hours do to extreme levels of traffic.

Twitter experienced downtime as a very large number of users began sending out tweets related to Jackson virtually at the same time.  Twitter continued to run slow for the rest of the day.  Social Media and News related sites also reported slow downs as everyone seemed to be trying to find any news or updates regarding Jackson’s condition.

It may be stating the obvious but widespread downtime like this has never happened before.

The Power of Social Media

June 18th, 2009 by James "Rick" Dragoo, Jr.

iran-protestsIf you have been keeping track of the news then you know about the conflicts in Iran right now.  All the rioting and unrest as a result of the recent election. If you somehow do not know, the President of Iran won the election so his presidency will continue and several Iranians are claiming that the election was rigged.

I’m not going to be doing any political commentary because quite frankly, I don’t think I’m well enough informed on the subject. But it is amazing how much we see concerning the rioting and unrest considering the Iranian government put a ban on all media within the country. They wanted to keep the rest of the world from seeing the unrest. So how are we seeing so many images and videos of what is happening on the television and online?

Cell phones. 60% of Iran’s population is under the age of 30. Many of these people are taking videos and pictures using their cell phones then sending them to other people outside the country who are posting them online and sending them to news agencies etc. Iranians are even posting news on twitter about the situation.

When you stop and think about it, 10 years ago their media black out probably would have put anyone outside the country in the dark. Today with cell phones, social networks, and twitter it seems that a general media black out just isn’t enough to stop information from getting out.

That’s the power of social media!

Drumming Up Business Around Memorial Day Weekend

May 11th, 2009 by James "Rick" Dragoo, Jr.

It may be a few days late but HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY from Blaine’s Business Services.  We hope you had a good weekend as well.

Shifting gears to business for a moment, did your business do any type of promotion for mother’s day?  Memorial Day weekend is coming up and although it is not as big a shopping day as say the day after Thanksgiving, many people shop, buy, and travel on that weekend.

Do some creative advertising and see if you can capitalize on some added business around the Memorial Day weekend. Offer special memorial day pricing or added gift with a purchase.  You have very little to loose and much to gain.

H1N1 (Swine) Flu Business Contingencies

May 4th, 2009 by James "Rick" Dragoo, Jr.

Do you have contingencies in place in case the H1N1 virus shows up in your organization? Here in the states it does not seem that we have to worry about fatalities as we have the medicines necessary to combat it.  The main concern seems to be containment. If someone gets the virus doctors recommend that person stay at home and avoid contact with others to keep the virus from spreading.

What if one of your employees had to take time off because they became infected or had to take care of an infected child. Your business should plan for situations like this. Ask yourself what would happen if… my top sales guy, my web designer, or any other key person had to be out of the office?

Even if nothing happens, having a plan in place could make all the difference. Just in case.
